Mania is a state of abnormally elevated, expansive or irritable mood accompanied by increased energy, a reduced need for sleep, rapid thoughts and speech, and impaired judgement that can lead to risky behaviour. It most often occurs as part of bipolar disorder. Sharanam provides medically supervised residential care to help stabilise a manic episode safely and protect the person from its consequences.
What the care involves
- Prompt psychiatric assessment and risk management.
- Medication management to bring the episode under control, with monitoring.
- A calm, low-stimulation environment that reduces overstimulation.
- Close supervision to prevent impulsive or risky decisions during the episode.
- Restoration of sleep and routine.
- Forward planning, once stable, to address any underlying bipolar disorder and prevent future episodes.
What to expect
A manic episode can usually be stabilised, but mania rarely occurs in isolation. Lasting benefit depends on treating the underlying condition and preventing relapse over the long term, often through our psychiatric rehabilitation program.
