Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) are distinct and often confused conditions. OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions) performed to relieve the anxiety they cause. OCPD is a personality style defined by rigidity, perfectionism, control and an inflexible attachment to rules, usually without the intrusive thoughts of OCD. Sharanam provides medically supervised residential assessment and treatment tailored to each.
What the treatment involves
- Careful assessment to distinguish OCD from OCPD, since they respond to different approaches.
- For OCD: exposure and response prevention therapy, the evidence-based first-line treatment.
- Medication management where indicated, with monitoring.
- For OCPD: longer-term psychotherapy focused on flexibility, insight and relationships.
- A structured routine and support in reducing rituals or rigid patterns.
- Family education and relapse-prevention planning.
What to expect
OCD often improves substantially with the right therapy. OCPD, being a personality pattern, changes more slowly. In both, the goal is greater flexibility and function rather than a quick cure.
