Depression with psychosis (psychotic depression) is a severe form of major depression in which low mood, hopelessness and loss of function are accompanied by psychotic symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations, often carrying a heightened risk of self-harm. Sharanam provides medically supervised residential treatment, combining antidepressant and antipsychotic medication with close observation, therapy and a safe, structured environment.
What the treatment involves
- Psychiatric assessment and risk monitoring, including for suicidal thoughts.
- Combined medication management — antidepressant and antipsychotic treatment — with monitoring for side effects.
- 24/7 observation in a calm, low-stimulation residential setting.
- Individual therapy, with group support once the person is well enough.
- Restoration of sleep, nutrition and routine in graded steps.
- Family involvement and early discharge planning.
What to expect
Psychotic depression usually responds well to treatment, but recovery takes time and relapse is possible, so ongoing follow-up matters. Where the psychotic symptoms are prominent, care is delivered alongside our psychosis treatment approach.
